My Toronto Sem Journey.

As I reflect upon my time at the Toronto Sem, I am filled with Ha’Karat Ha’Tov, immense gratitude for the impact it has had on my life. The Sem, nestled in the vibrant halls of the Village Shul and Aish Thornnill, is not merely an institution of learning; it is a sanctuary where knowledge, tradition, and mentorship converge to shape our souls.

The Power of Jewish Learning

The Sem’s commitment to Jewish education is unwavering. From studying the essence of Jewish marriage to exploring the depths of the Five Books of Moses, every class is a voyage into the timeless wisdom of our heritage. I have witnessed my understanding of Judaism evolve, layer by layer, with each class. The Sem’s faculty brings passion and erudition to each lesson, igniting a hunger for knowledge that transcends the classroom and inspires lasting, steady growth.

Mentorship: A Guiding Light

The mentorship at the Sem is nothing short of extraordinary. Mrs. Aliza Cohen, the Sem’s invaluable Sem Mama, exemplifies the spirit of mentorship. Her warmth, humor, and genuine care for each student create an environment where questions are welcomed, doubts are explored, and growth is nurtured—always with a warm smile and a hug. Mrs. Cohen’s guidance extends beyond academics, touching the core of our souls.

Mrs. Liat Garelick: Our Modern-Day Sarah Schenirer

In the heart of this transformative journey stands Mrs. Liat Garelick—our modern-day Sarah Schenirer, z’’l. Mrs. Garelick’s vision, dedication, and tireless efforts have shaped the Sem into a beacon of light. She recognized a crucial gap in the Toronto Jewish community—one that echoes across Orthodox circles worldwide: the hunger for advanced Jewish learning among Ba’alot Teshuvot. These remarkable women, for various reasons, cannot currently embark on the traditional Sem journey in Eretz Yisroel. They are the ones who balance full-time work, navigate the intricacies of married and family life, and tread the path of pre- and post-seminary exploration. The Toronto Sem, under Mrs. Garelick’s guidance, becomes their oasis—a place where intellectual curiosity thrives, tradition is kindled, and the flame of knowledge illuminates their unique journeys. Mrs. Garelick’s passion for Torah and education radiates, inspiring us to embrace our heritage with renewed fervour.

Juggling Life: Marriage, Work, and Faith

Amidst the pages of our Holy texts, I find solace as I juggle the intricate dance of married life and a demanding full-time job. The Sem has become my anchor—a place where I recharge my spirit, even when the 24/6 whirls at a relentless pace. Balancing deadlines, family responsibilities, and late-night work, the Sem’s teachings infuse my daily routine with purpose, reminding me that every moment is an opportunity for growth.

Community and Connection

In conclusion, the Toronto Sem has enriched my life beyond measure. It is a place where ancient wisdom meets contemporary hearts, where mentorship fuels growth, and where Mrs. Liat Garelick’s and Mrs. Aliza Cohen’s lights guide us toward a brighter future. As I continue my Jewish journey, I carry with me the torch of knowledge alongside inspiring Jewish women who tread their parallel paths.
